What Is Larimar?

Larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite associated with the Dominican Republic. While pectolite itself can be found elsewhere, the distinctive blue material known as Larimar comes from the Dominican Republic.

Its colors can range from pale blue and blue-green to richer turquoise and deeper shades of blue, often with natural white patterns running through the stone. Because Larimar is a natural stone, each piece has its own variations in color, pattern and markings.

Born in the Dominican Republic

There’s only one place in the world where Larimar is found — the Dominican Republic.

Tucked away in the mountains of the country’s southwest, Larimar formed within ancient volcanic rock, creating the beautiful blues and natural patterns that make the stone so distinctive.

From those mountains to the turquoise Caribbean just beyond them, it’s easy to see why Larimar feels like a little piece of the sea.

1916

The First Record

Larimar’s documented story begins in 1916, when Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Lorén reported the unusual blue stone found in the Dominican Republic.

1974

Rediscovered

In 1974, Miguel Méndez and Norman Rilling rediscovered the blue stone along the coast of Barahona, beginning Larimar’s modern story.

LARISSA + MAR

A Name Inspired by the Sea

Méndez named the stone Larimar, combining part of his daughter Larissa’s name with mar, the Spanish word for sea.

From Caribbean Stone to Larimar Jewelry

Before Larimar ever becomes jewelry, each stone has its own natural pattern, color and character. Once cut and polished, those Caribbean blues and white markings become even more striking — and no two stones look exactly alike.

That natural variation is part of what I love about Larimar. Whether it’s set into an ocean-inspired pendant, a pair of earrings or another special piece, the stone itself is always part of the design.
